Eratosthenes and Archimedes — The Sphere and Cylinder

Abstract: Eratosthenes, Librarian of Alexandria, measured the diameter of the Earth in 200 BC. Archimedes, his friend from Syracuse, calculated the volume of the sphere using an ingenious mechanical model. Archimedes also designed a machine to represent the Moon, the Sun and of the planets. A copy of it was found in a shipwreck off the Turkish coasts. 

Horvathy教授简介：

Peter Horvathy教授是著名的理论物理学家。 1985年在法国马赛大学理论物理中心获得法国国家博士学位，目前是法国Tours大学数学与理论物理实验室教授。

Horvathy教授长期从事规范场理论和对称性等理论物理中基本问题的研究，在国际上首次提出了二维平面上奇异粒子(exotic particles)的概念，成功的从第一性原理解释了与霍尔效应相关的物理现象，包括新发现的反常霍尔效应和光学霍尔效应。另外Horvathy教授深入研究了非相对论物理系统中独特的对称性，这与目前AdS/CFT在低能物理中的应用密切相关。

Horvathy教授在Physics Report，Phys. Rev. Lett 等国际重要期刊上发表论文一百多篇。
