    Exploring Astrophysical Phenomena in Laboratory with Lasers

     报告摘要:

      Significant progresses have recently been made for exploring astrophysical phenomena in laboratory with lasers. Rich in exciting physics, such undertakings provide tremendous but challenging opportunities for frontier science, advancing our understanding of various aspects fundamental to the structure and evolution of the universe. Interesting and important issues include, for example,

    What controls the temperature and dynamics in stellar interiors? 

    What are the interior structures of planets and how are they formed? 

    How do massive stars explode as core-collapse supernovae? 

    What are the conditions near an accreting black hole? 

    How do gamma ray burst shocks form and radiate?

        While astrophysical phenomena have traditionally been studied with observations and theoretical modeling, the advent of high-intensity, high-energy lasers made it possible of a more quantitative approach in laboratories for validating and complementing such studies. In this talk, astrophysical phenomena at extreme conditions and their relationship with high-energy-density (HED) plasmas created by lasers are outlined. The physics and methodology for connecting laboratory experiments to astrophysical phenomena will be discussed. A number of recent experiments, including our work, for addressing the important issues in the frontier astrophysics will be introduced. These experiments have advanced our understanding of and provided important insight into many interesting astrophysical phenomena, including magnetic reconnection, plasma Instabilities and spontaneous fields, astrophysical jets and collisionless shocks, plasma nuclear science, equation of state, opacity, and pair electrons, etc. The highlights of these works have been manifested by numerous recent publications.

    Prof. Chikang Li 于1993年获得美国麻省理工学院博士学位; 1993-1994年在美国麻省理工做博士后; 1995-2011先后在美国麻省理工学院任研究员、高级研究员、资深研究员。Prof. Chikang Li 现为美国物理学会会士(APS Fellow); 美国高能量密度科学协会主席(2011–2012); 美国麻省理工学院等离子科学中心高能量密度物理研究部副主任; 美国麻省理工学院高能量密度物理研究基金Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI); 美国能源部高能量密度实验室物理评审委员会成员。

    Prof. Chikang Li 在国际学术会议做特邀报告20余次;发表高水平论文200余篇, 其中以第一作者在Science, Physical Review Letters发表论文近20篇。 作为会议主席举办多次国际学术会议; 是Nature; Science; Phys. Rev. Lett.; Phys. Plasmas等众多主要国际学术期刊 特邀审稿人。
